The August 2002 issue of CWB Magazine has a feature article about my work. |
The photos below show the construction of a Craftsman style mesquite coffee table. The table will be 53" long, 26" wide, and 19" high. The top will be made from two 13" wide boards, the bottom shelf is a single 15" wide board. Mesquite has many cracks and voids that I fill with West brand epoxy that is tinted black. The table legs have the mortises cut for the side rails. The remaining pieces are milled to size and are ready for the joinery. Move the mouse pointer over the photo for the table part names.
The table is dry fit together for the first time. The next step is the join the breadboard ends to the top and fit the bottom shelf between the two bottom stretchers. The next three photos show the joinery and table parts being glued and clamped. The photo below is the table top and breadboard ends. During the glueup only the center tongue in glued, allowing the top to expand and contract with humidity changes.
The legs are glued to the side rails. The photo below shows the mortice and tenon joinery along with the three mortises for the bottom shelf.
The photo below shows the two drawers with dovetail joinery, the mesquite drawer slides, the mesquite drawer bottoms in the clamps, and the completed and sanded table top in the background. The completed coffee table.
